Blizzard is a vox populi radio documentary, done in audio verité style, capturing everday people's feelings about snow, recorded during Chicago's huge snow storm of 1979. In Blizzard, citizens of all backgrounds and ages describe the impact of the big snow on daily life and human relations as well as transportation and government - painting a complex portrait of urban humanity in the face of hostile weather. Some people view snow as playful, others view it as a hassle, and still others have very unique perspectives.
The city's inadequate response to the snow storm is credited with bringing about Jane Byrne's upset victory over incumbent mayor Michael Bilandic in the Democratic primary, leading to her historic election as Chicago's first woman mayor. The public reaction that led to this election result, occurring six weeks after the storm, is explicitly captured during the documentary. Public transit passengers, displaced from the non-operational "L" and waiting for the bus, spend several minutes discussing the mayor's role in handling the snowstorm (listen to Bus Stop Politics).
However, Blizzard only has those few minutes of public outcry and discussion about government. Other sections of the sound portrait include comments of a street corner newsstand operator, children playing (listen to Children At Play), and young people who recount how legendary actor Yul Brynner made reference to the snow in that day's performance of The King and I, from which they were returning. Listeners also hear from a recent African immigrant experiencing his first snow. One individual, who perhaps had consumed too much alcohol for too many years, explains how a moon rocket caused the snow (listen to That Moon Rocket). These stories are among the scores of comments by couples and individuals about how they dislike or love snow (listen to Love and Hate).
Originally broadcast under a different title on WNIB-FM (now WDRV-FM), Blizzard is being re-edited to 28:30 for broadcast today and is receiving new introductory and closing narration.
